Erika runs a perfume shop in Celadon city and only allows trainers to enter her gym and compete for a Rainbow badge if they enjoy the smell of perfume. Much like the game, Erika also only allows females to become students in her gym. She is first shown wearing a Japanese kimono, but later in her gym she is shown wearing street clothes: a sleek single piece green dress. She has a very strong relationship with the Pokémon Gloom, who saved her from a wild Grimer as a child. She is very sensitive when it comes to her perfume, perhaps because most of it is made from the essence of her best friend Gloom. Erika seemed to be pleased with the fact that Brock is love stricken by her good looks, unlike most of the women that he tries to flirt with. Erika also enjoys telling her students and grass Pokémon stories.
Erika is a very wise gym leader and cares for all grass type Pokemon, even if her opponents own them. For example, when Bulbasaur was paralyzed by Tangela’s stun spore, Erika offered Ash some paralyzed heal.
